October 2020 Wrap Up

My reading goal for the year was to read a book a month, because, normally my reading is very irregular. For a few months out of the year I’ll read a bunch of books, others none. This month I was in a reading slump. I had like 6 books I planned to read this month, but I didn’t start reading until the 19th.

Catcher In The Rye by J. D. Salinger

thoughts: I’m not sure what to say that hasn’t been said. I can’t stop thinking about this book.

Holden Caulfield, the main character, isn’t a love or hate character. Lots of people find him annoying because he’s very angsty, but I actually enjoyed his character. I liked how the book was written like his train of thought, it made the book feel like I was just listening to someone talking.

Not really much of a plot, more of a character driven story. There is an overall theme in the book, I recommend this article to read more about it. (TW: sexual assault)

The book drags near the ending and some of the middle.

quotes i enjoyed: “Don’t ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.” (pg. 214)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

thoughts: I was so excited to read this book for October, I thought it’d be a scary read. But sadly, it ended up being super boring.

The over writing really slowed down this book. When something actually was happening in this book the writing would over explain (or be over poetic) to the point where the scene feels lack luster. This book could’ve (and should’ve imo) been like 150 pages. And yet another book I read this month where the ending dragged. SO MUCH.

This was the first Ray Bradbury book i’ve read, are all of them written like this? If so, I’d be hesitant to read anymore by him.

quotes i enjoyed: “Such are the autumn people. Beware of them.” (pg. 176) and “Evil has only the power that we give it.” (pg. 249)

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

thoughts: THE CUTEST BOOK EVER! This is my first graphic novel and it certainly won’t be the last. I’d just stare at pages because the art is SO PRETTY!

When I just think about this book I smile. I KNOW I KEEP SAYING THIS BUT IT’S SO DARN CUTE!

The story is simple but I don’t see that as a negative, it let’s the art shine.

quotes i enjoyed: “I don’t want October to be over. Because October means you.” (pg. 15) and “Friends don’t let friends live small lives.” (pg. 200)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Tv Show:

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season 1)

Ok not a book but I just had to talk about this show! I just finished season 1 of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, it was fantastic. I watched this show when the first season came out on Netflix, which was like 5 years ago. I was too young to understand most of the jokes so watching this now I appreciate how smart this show is. It’s a musical comedy about a New York lawyer, Rebecca Bunch, who moves to West Covina for her high school ex.

The songs in this show are so good! They all play on tropes of normal musical tropes, like instead of a love ballad you get a song about setting for someone. I have at least one song from this show stuck in my head at all times!

The show has well rounded characters, actually funny jokes and smart writing. The only negative thing I can think about this show is sometimes the situations in this show are uncomfortable to watch. (Mostly Rebecca getting caught in lies). But, the show is so well paced that the scene progresses quickly.

I can’t say enough great things about this show!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Thank you for reading! Let me know what you read this month!

Stay safe!
